As promised here is my first offering of what I hope will be many in the near future. Thanks for looking.

Sound of Sirens - What’s that noise?

I didn’t exactly get my hopes up when I received this CD in the post from this self proclaimed ‘honest, in your face rock n roll band’ but I didn’t want my pre-conception to put me off what these guys have to offer. Unfortunately for Sound of Sirens my feelings were confirmed on listening to the first track which lacked in energy as much as it did originality. The singer never seemed to attempt to take himself out of his comfort zone and with simple guitar riffs as a backdrop for him, this song never left the territory of being a standard indie tune.

The next offering from the Leeds based 5 piece didn’t impress me too much either, failing to even get a foot-tapping, the aptly named ‘time to sleep’ barely seemed to lift off the ground. To give the guys credit, the recordings so far didn’t seem to blend together as one tune, it was as though all of them were playing the same song but it just didn’t seem to gel well. Not as impressed as I would have hoped, I had my fingers crossed that the last musical delight from Sound of Sirens would give me the energy fix I was needing after 6 and a half minutes of anti-climactic efforts.

The third and final song that Sound of Sirens offer for our listening pleasure on ‘What’s that noise?’ is Goodbye. This seems to be the more mellow song on this EP and works a lot better than the previous attempts. As before I felt that this track has been recorded and then put together by a music production student on his first assignment, and this definitely doesn’t do the band any justice. It picks up towards the end with a change of pace and some guitar work which fits quite nicely with the rest of the song.

After listening to the EP a second time over I found that it was a little bit easier to listen to, maybe it will even grow on me yet! Overall I would say that the 3 tracks offered by these local boys aren’t as energetic as I would have liked, then again that’s just my preference. Never the less, I will be seeing these Live in the near future and who knows, maybe I’ll be able to get my much needed feed of energy there.

Overall score 2/5.

Cheers for putting this up for me, I'll put some more up when I get the chance to review a couple of the other CD's I have received recently.
