the 'T' Room #7
KOOPA
....now this lot have made a bit of a splash in the last week - and so it appears, deservedly so! this looks to be the beginnings of a meteoric rise into the public awareness - and an abject lesson to all aspiring acts as to just how to effectively market yourselves on the net... offered up as an intoduction is the most excellent:
MINISKIRTS
...very well observed lyrics are the cherry on the top of this tastey poppy punk cake... in the mix are some fantasticly crunchy guitars layered with the obligatory choppy riffs and sparkely arppegioes, the arrangement a masterfull crafting of just what one expects at just the right moment - but avoiding all the obvious pitfalls of cliche with a deftness of touch belying thier, once again, tender years... a punchy bass and some extremely energetic drums complete the base for this exquisite little morsel... smacking ou collective lips together we continue to salivate over the icing of some fantasticly tight vocal arrangements within the rip-roaring journey through the song - tight as the proverbial gnats chuff... some great unexpected breaks... bass, drums, guitar and vox forming a fluid whole - but it is the lyrical content that brings a real smile to ones mouth - a clever and not over-arch indictment of a girl we all kno, one that all us chaps have fantasized about getting to know better - and some of us have been unfortunate enough to do so!
...some great lines in here:
" coz it takes you like 9 hours to do all your make-up/and like 10 years to finnish your hair..."
...a funny, wry observation of the modern teen girls self-obsession that manages, somehow not to be just a rampant piss-take but evokes a certain level of pathos for the subject.... like Koopa say.... she thinks she has freinds....
PROFILE : Koopa
AREA 15
this lot just go from strength to strength, eh?
...and are they cocky...? dunno 'bout that, but they are certainly getting confident - confident to start posting up demos for our collective perusal!
NEWSONG FIRST DEMO
....another cracking little outing from the boys from Doncaster... and if this is just a demo - it should put many of the acts out there to shame, being, as it is, in the full glare of public scrutiny a display of higher production and recording ethics than many others reserve for their 'product'!
...spanking stuf - with all the hallmarks of quality that have seen them rise from nowhere in a scant few months to be reall contenders for the pop-punk crown... there's competition from our previous entrants... let battle commence!
PROFILE : Area15
IVAN CAMPO
newbies on the site here, that have been attracting plenty of attention in their home stomping ground of the north west... named after a spanish footballer for whom a google search points us in the direction of a website named: uglyfootballers.com - one might question the wisdom of such a move as they are never likely to hit the top of the search engine rankings...
THE KNOT
...jazzy acoustic pop here - of the ilk of Fairground Attraction from a few years back... a pleasant diversion and most certainly capable of invoking a tapping of the foot... this recording has a very pleasant mellow but sparkly quality to it... fitting for a sunday lunchtime...
...now whilst it must be said that this isn't my particular cup of tea... it is writen, arranged and performed by a group of musicians that can most obviously play extremely well, and the additions to the sound of mandolins and the like give an authentic flavour to proceedings... if yer a mellow bod, (...and anyone who has ever had the pleasure of my company for more than five minutes knows i for one am not!) ...then this lilting sweet sound may be the quintessence af all they seek from a band - i am sure that there are many out there.... it's up to them to find that audience - which i have no doubts they shall...
...occupying a unique place amonst the genre driven output from a host of other acts - the do stand out - a shame that web-wise a swarthy fullback has them beat hands down!
PROFILE : Ivan Campo
ARCTIC MONKEYS
do you really need to know more....?
.....do you....?
no, i didn't think so!
....enjoy....
PROFILE : Arctic Monkeys
WASTED DAYS
...well it seems to have been overall a bit of a punktastic turnout this week, eh?
...here we have yet another power pop punk trio - hailing from the smoke this time... first up on the old autoplay:
NEVER SAY NEVER
...nowhere near as polished as the previous contenders, but highly accomplished nonetheless, this track displays all the musical prowess of the other two, but is somewhat let down by the 'demoish' quality of the recording... as a comparison is always never too far away in this industry - an act really has to show themselves in the best possible light.... if i were to be listening to this in isolation, i might have found it really rather good... but today, having been assailed by two of the best exponents of this genre - and both of whom present as slick a presence as i have seen on this site, i'm afraid they simply leave themselves open to the critisism of needing to try harder... not MUCH of a critisism, but where as the other two definately aspire to the premiership - if not the champions league, i suspect that Wasted Days will be chuffed to get into the 4th round of the F.A.Cup...
...if yer gonna dream - dream big dreams.... and make the investment!
Wasted Days

Do the bands that are reviewed get a message to say the review has been done?
if not does someone want to tell them and send a link etc or shall I do it?

Nice thought John! As ever!
Tarquin - have you ever thought about writing a novel along the lines of Discworld? I only ask because there seems to be some kind of parallel universe thing goin gon in your mind at the moment. Or is it therapy you really need!
Bit too much detail for a Sunday! AND I only have a small short term memory...
