the 'T' Room #5

....well, after last weeks kerfufle, the ensuing shenanigans and revelations... things have settled down just a little at Moshers Manor...

...the question of Marvin the midget gimps lineage, having finaly been put to rest, has facilitated a mellowing of the relationship 'twixt his parents... (my neighbors: the Grotesque-Withers's), and i ...and as happenstance would have it, the Wing-Commander and i indulge a shared passion for 'classic' face-pockets of the 50's and 60's - he swears he knows the previous owner of my rather fine Velcronite example...

...as i ponder over memories of when Marvin first came into my service - some 17 years ago - i recall the small advertisment i spied on the side of a carton of the local 'Moo-Juice', that enquired: "Have You Seen This Midget?"  ...and think to myself - if only it had asked, "Have you Seen This Gimp?"

...Old Ma Wackrill snaps me from my reverie by unceremoniously dumping infront of me, a huge ultra-mug of steaming char... and i reluctantly desist from rooting about my gusset and withdraw my magnificent meerschaum...

...ah, how Sunday mornings seem just made for a good rough Bali Shag...

music is whats required now - so i turn my attention to the pre-eminent movers in the charts... one:

GARY DUNNE

well, it seems our Gary has been gathering plaudits like they're goin' outa fashion... some really rather impressive quotes from the press adorn his profile here, and as the first track kicks in it is really quite blantantly obvious as to why!

AMERIKAN FOLK SONG

...from the very off this screams out class...  with one of the most infectious lolloping, languid grooves that my ears have had the pleasure of bobing, with the rest of my head, along to in quite some time - this track sets out it's stall in no uncertain terms... with only the mearest preamble we're off... "you gotta get 'em from the get go", he tells us at one point - an no messin' - that's exactly what he does!

...there's a whole tapestry of lush touches in the arrangement that slowly builds around the central rolling acoustic riff, and by the time the solo - all dueling guitars soaring into the stratosphere, arrives.... well, if you DON'T have a shiver runnin' down your spine, i'd suggest a quick trip down the Doc's - as you may be clinicaly dead!

...this is a great track from a most obviously, highly talented songwriter... and yet another classic example of some of the utterly fantastic music you can find here on UKBands... but probably NOT on a radio near you, mores the pity!

....check this guy out - you owe it to your ears... they may pack up and leave home if you don't! ...but if you take my advice, you too shall soon be joining me in his praise...

jig-a-boom-boom, jig-a-boom!

PROFILE : Gary Dunne

...i have given my blessing to the chimps on thier quite remarkable collection of costumes for the Halloween Ball... and have been admonished by Old Ma W. for sneeking a peek at her putting Delores and Grunwalt through their paces for their delightful rendition of Abbas 'Dancing Queen' - as it's all supposed to be a big surprise...  i have also signed for the shipment of antique Banjoes that were ordered at the behest of Senor Cumquat - who assures me that they shall be neccessary for proceedings... the mind boggles: just what DO those chimps have up thier collective wafting lacey sleeves, i wonder...?

....they do all look rather spiffing today, dressed - as they are, in homage of Lawrence Llewellyn-Bowen...

...more music!

FIRST.SUBJECT

...regular posters on the forums and a familiar name to those that peruse boards there... the lads profile needs a little updating as there seem to be some dodgy links lurking therein - doesn't give the best of impressions chaps, sort it out eh?

...there's four tracks available on the deeplink - so i afoard myself a trouch of perusal and plump for...

HOOKED

....as i am intrigued to find out if i will be!

....this is quite caustic stuff, this - with spikey guitars pricking at my ears with a relentless lick as the distorted vox, sounding suitably nefarious, rants out of the speakers at me...

...there's quite a mix of stylistic influences at work here, with elements of goth, metal and punk all jostling for attention as an energetic rhythm section positively hare off at a breakneck speed...

....a right old mosh-fest live, this - i would suspect... great guitars are centerpiece of an arrangement that simply cracks along with only the briefest of respite...

catch yer breath when you get the chance, as those lulls in proceedings don't last long!

...i have to say that from my impression of this track alone, that some judicious mastering could be applied here - to add a little gloss - and up the volume, as i had to whack the old amplifier up quite a bit to get the air to start moving... but a small gripe - all considered, eh?

...i shall be checking out their other tracks, for sure...

...hooked...?

...maybe not quite - not just yet...

...but most certainly developing a bit of a habit!

PROFILE : First.Subject

...i stand, now in the abandoned tower, looking out across the grounds with my 3.5" refractor and spy Mudne Grotesuqe-Withers gaily cavorting with Marvin up by the folly... she playfully whips him with a riding crop, perched precariously upon his broad shoulders, as they bounce along in corybantic fashion on the custom built black leather 'gimp-hopper', that i had made for him some Christmas past...

...i swear i can hear the high-pitched nasal tones of Mudnes delighted shrieks even from my somewhat distant vantage point!

....joy to the world indeed! ...i move on to the next combo to be gracing my Sunday playlist - those rascally press-darlings:

THE ARCTIC MONKEYS

...now then, no surprises in this lot making an appearance all of a sudden, bearing in mind the attention they seem to have garnered for themselves in the media, here i feel it only fair to wrap me lugs about the track that seems to have caused all the fuss -

LOOK GOOD ON THE DANCEFLOOR

...launching in with some hefty punches to the body, the song then progresses with a jabbing guitar that bobs and weaves about your ears like some mad little bugger of a bantam-weight boxer intent on provoking you into a fight....

...the vox arrive, delivered with only the meerest hint of a sneer, and run effectively with the feel of internal dialogue, the tone of which, listening to the excellent lyrics, will be familliar to any chap that has pondered on working up the nerve to chat up the aloof chick at a club... the intent and inherant wit simply engage the imagination and allow the excellent - and VERY tight band - to get on with the business in hand... that of delivering a perfectly formed slab of post-modern pop that simply reeks of all our tomorrows... this could be the shape of things to come... not as 'arch' as Franz Ferdinand... not as bombastic as Kaiser Chiefs... funny and at one in the same time, generating pathos...  and all driven along by a rollicking musical backing that seems to have a direct telepathic link to yer foot that says: "Tap..... Tap....."

...big stuff in store for these bright young things... they are certainly punching above their weight, i suppose only time shall tell if they are destined to lift the heavyweight crown...

...but at the moment, they most certainly are contenders!

PROFILE : Arctic Monkeys

...i seem unable to snap myself out of this inclination toward apathetic indolence, so i don my luxurious Tibetan hat and resolve myself to take a stroll about the manaquin store in the catacombes beneath the Manor house... pouring myself a large chalice of Absynthe, i move on in the playlist and regail my eary-pods with the strains of those litigious newcomers:

QUEENS COUNCIL

...deary me, now these young whippersnappers just seem to have become flushed with the touch of the meerest hint of a success - an have let it all go to their collective heads!

...from the start, what have we got going on with the name...?  ...is it a joke..? a 'play' on words...?

...the correct term for a prosecuting barrister is: Queens Counsel.... so either no marks in the spelling test - or a joke that's gonna require constant explanation here!

...second, a profile full of hyperbole, and not a full track to peruse in sight!  ...now bearing in mind the quality of some of the acts here on UKBands that are more than happy to post up the odd loss-leader, this would appear to be an attempt to shoot both feet.

...lastly - the music... well, i'm not gonna rip into 'em - as it's obvious they're only young puppies - and we ALL had to start somewhere, eh? ...but from what i could make out, it covered a lot of ground already adorned with the well worn tracks and the muddy bootprints of a trillon punk bands before them... sorry chaps...

'A' for effort - 'E' for achievement.

PROFILE : Queens Council

...my mood seems to have lifted having played with the old 'human lego' for a while...  and i feel somewhat refreshed after imbibing a little of my favorite glittering green tipple....  feeling more able to face the guests, i slip into a rather cheeky sheer chifon jumpsuit, and team it with a pair of authentic 30's asphalt spreaders boots, its busy today - and the general hubub gives way to an uneasy silence as i enter...

....i regale the assembled dignitaries and scallywags with a quick "Huzzah!" ...and whack the amplifier up to the 'unfeasibly rambunctious' setting for the last of todays movers and shakers, the quirkily monikered:

AREA 15

...in complete contrast to the previous lot - here's a profile that gives plenty of information and a link for recieving a free promo CD...

first track up on the autoplay is:

LET ME GO

....at 16, 16,and 17 resectively - these guys show a musical expertise way beyond their years, and this highly accomplished track bears a striking similarity to Blink 182.... a little too much of a resemblance if truth be told... but i am sure as they gain experience that they shall develop a sound more their own...

well executed and recorded, the lads seem to have been gathering praise for their live performances ...and with their commitment to getting their stuff out there for people to listen to, i would suspect that an adoring gagle of fans shall soon be swelling to at least a throng...

best of British to 'em!

...keep it up lads - i shall certainly be keeping an eye on how things progress...

PROFILE : Area15

...that's it for this week then, chaps'n'chapettes.... i trust a fun time was had by all and sundry... as the chimps now clear away the devestation under the stern, unforgiving glare of Old ma W., it simply remains for me to say once again:

Toodle Pip!
