"The Rossendale Hospice Charity Rock Out"
Event Presented by IDAS ( http://www.brightice.com/service and Rossendale Leisure Trust. http://www.rltrust.co.uk/bacup_leisure_hall.asp ) . Rossendale Free press - 24th November 2005 - Hospice hit by £100,000 bombshell The Rossendale Hospice do fantastic work for the terminally ill in the surrounding areas and as highlighted in the Free press 24/11/2005 are facing a huge £100,000 shortfall in funding for the first time since it opened its day centre in 1990. In order to raise as much money as we can for the hospice Jane Britton ( ICE) and Dale Connearn ( Leisure Trust) have worked together in putting on a night of fantastic music and entertainment that will appeal to not only the youth in the valley but will hopefully generate some trade for surrounding businesses. “It all started with an article in the Free Press and I am delighted with the way it has progressed. It is great to promote the use of the Leisure Hall, bring live music to the Valley and put on an event local youths will want to attend”. =====EVENT INFORMATION===== EVENT DATE: 28th April 2006 TIME: 8pm - 1am -- doors open 7:30pm VENUE: Bacup Leisure Hall , Burnley Road, Bacup, OL13 8AU , Tel: 01706 875550 ( Venue Capacity = 450) TICKET PRICE: £6.00 TICKET AVAILABILITY - you can purchase tickets direct from the Bacup Leisure Hall Venue Tel: 01706 875550 or via Ticket Web - or phone 08700 600 100 (24 hours) http://www.ticketweb.co.uk/user/?region=gb_northwest&query=schedule&promoter=rossendale[/ url] WEBSITE FOR THE EVENT- http://www.brightice.com/band click on the button CHARITIES to see details of the event. "Perfect Pop rock" with attitude from the Rossendale rockers, "White Noise" as featured in the Rossendale Free Press Nov 2005. “Janie's vocals were awesome” – Craig Grove Recording Engineer Storm Studios Birmingham 2005. Album being recorded, October 2006 on independent release online. FOURDAYHOMBRE http://www.fourdayhombre.co.uk and http://www.myspace.com/fourdayhombre Five piece band based in Leeds, playing original pop/rock. With little care or respect for the latest music-fad, the core of the FDH ethos is timeless, intelligent and passionate song-writing. The importance of this is reflected in what has influenced them; glimpsed in early Genesis or Bowie; in Scott Walker or Nick Drake; in Prefab Sprout, Tears for Fears or REM. Their modern equivalents might be The Frames or Elbow; or Death Cab for Cutie; or what Keane would be like if they had bigger balls. Eclectic to be sure, but gripping and passionate... 'Like Elbow with bigger beards and better dreams' NME "Scorching and Beautiful in all the right places" Jo Whiley - Radio 1. Album News - Experiment in Living release date 13/03/2006 Single News - 'The first word is the Hardest' went in at 12 in the Indie chart , reaching 66 in the national physical chart. Album and single available from HMV, Virgin and independent record shops. BRONX Five piece Rock Covers band based in Rossendale ARKENDALE “Teen rock band in Hospice Gig” Our sixth-former five piece Rock Covers band from Rossendale . As featured in the Rossendale Free Press Friday 24th March 2006. "Lead singer Dominic Phillips had bereavement counselling at the hospice when he was six and is joining as a volunteer in the Summer. He wanted to do a fund-raiser as a thank-you to the hospice for the care he was shown when his father died." ( Quote provided by permission of Catherine Smyth ‘The Rossendale Freepress’) 'LIKE AN ANGEL' – song written by Paul Britton from ICE with the Hospice in Mind Jane Britton (The ICE Band) will be performing a song on the night specially written with the Hospice’s work in mind. Their will be a recording of the song on sale on the night with a percentage of the earnings being donated to the Rossendale Hospice. JAX ( BV for Heather Small previously from M People) has very kindly contributed to the vocals. DJ Plus for your enjoy during the intervals DJ-Matt Fairhurst |

GIITTV ZINE IS JAMMING!
http://www.godisinthetvzine.co.uk BRIXTON JAMM- SUNDAY 21ST OF MAY. http://www.brixtonjamm.org/find_us.asp DOORS: 7PM PRICE:£5 or £4 with flyer (available from individual bands) Liverpool’s HOT CLUB DE PARIS are creating quite a storm, and it’s little wonder with their angular tunes and harmonic melodies they are literally bursting at the seems with invention. They recently played a session for John Kennedy at XFM and have been favourably compared to the Futureheads. Catch them in a small venue before it’s too late! http://www.myspace.com/hotclubdeparis DRINK ME are fast earning a reputation as one of London’s most dynamic, innovative and exciting live bands, riding the Permanent Wave with influences as diverse as 80s electronica, 70s punk and ska and 90s Britpop. The band formed when guitarist / singer Julian (Whitey, Siobhan Fahey) and bassist / vocalist Ru began writing tracks together, melding their individual tastes into a tapestry of polished melodies and biting lyrics. “Great rock and roll music” – Alan McGee, Radio 1 “All the quirky romance of a post-Britpop trio who know their way round a tune” – Steve Lamacq, Radio 1 http://www.myspace.com/drinkmeonline Brighton’s THE BLACK TULIPS are quite simply fantastic: dirty, dark, twisted, and glamorous. The Female fronted Tulips devoured all before them with their insatiable first EP, and they now return to the Capital to captivate, and destroy. “unconventional, literate and visually appealing... raw, brash English assault… electrifyingly close to the bone, like Siouxsie encountering the Slits on the set of Rocky Horror… frenetic but utterly tuneful… hugely impressive” GIGWISE “The Black Tulips have come to steal your soul, make you fall in love and then destroy you… filthy and twisted and out of control… inherently glorious.” DIS http://www.theblacktulips.com/ My First Radio combine the fragile atmospherics of Engineers, Mogwai and Redjetson with the mashed up effects pedal punk of Bloc Party and add the vocal kick in the nuts of Six By Seven and latter day Primal Scream. Shoegazing with size twelves. http://www.myspace.com/myfirstradio London based 4 piece SOB DOLLIES harness a wide ranging influences (from Captain Beefheart and Hendrix, through to Crass, Siouxsie Sioux, Kate Bush & PJ Harvey.) “One of the best unsigned bands I have seen in a long time…A singer reminiscent of PJ Harvey; with a sharp eye for a lyric, and a crazed (and very entertaining!) dance. Her quirky vocal theatrics reflected the milder (and to me, 'better') side of Bjork. Add to this angular guitar reminiscent of Nick Zinner (YYYs) and songs that not only packed in memorable hooks but would also throw you with unexpected breakdowns and changes of pace’ GOD IS IN THE TV ZINE http://www.myspace.com/sobdollies |

Blind Pew: “Perfect pop experts, Blind Pew are one of Scotland’s undiscovered rock gems. Sounding a little like chart-shaking act Orson, these four lads from Glasgow make each chorus and anthem pulled from a ‘best rock songs in the World ever’ list. Epic, quality rock. Brilliant!” …
Karma Download, March 2006
“As live bands go, these guys have style and class in bucketloads. Nothing else needs to be said… go see this band!” …
Glasswerk, December 2005
“Like Jack Black’s Tenacious D, Blind Pew successfully mix their black comedy lyrics with some dirty Rock’N’Roll rhythms which are worthy of a comparison to some of Britain’s most loved rock acts. Definitely a band to watch out for” … Live Music Direct, February 2006
Reverend & The Makers: “For those versed in Arctic Monkeys folklore, The Reverend, aka The Reverend Jon Rarsclart, aka Jon McLure is a crucial, yet mysterious figure. The band’s links to him originate from a turn-of-the-century Sheffield community music-style project called Judan Suki, which Alex and Matt were part of. After that, he formed the electro-pop band 1984, as namechecked in ‘I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor” … NME, April 2006 |

INDIGO COLONY (Newcastle) www.myspace.com/inidgocolony Indigo Colony emerged from the mean streets of Whitley Bay in 2003 and quickly made a reputation for themselves on the North East music scene as a band to watch. From melodic indie rock to powerpop, stylish, original but with a sense of humour. “Indigo Colony are fantasic” Zane Lowe – Radio 1. “They’re superb….these guys are so much better than most of the glut of mediocre posers so fussed over by the music press” The Crack. RYAN IS FUN (Tyneside) www.myspace.com/ryanisfun Ryan is Fun are a great local band making waves throughout the North East. They play great new wave rockabilly tracks. From North Shields they are lyrically poetic, visual and fast. Music to tear it up to. |

In Manchester on the 24 January? Then stop off at Jabez Clegg and see Make Good Your Escape along with Laymar.
This is what Manchestermusic have to say about the gig ---- ESCAPE TO THE JABEZ By Cath Aubergine 02 January 2007 Fierce Panda's passionate indie rockers Make Good Your Escape follow their excellent In The City 2006 performance with a return to Manchester on 24th January at the Jabez Clegg. Make Good Your Escape come from Chichester and formed in Brighton in summer 2004. They released their debut single ‘No Return’ in October 2005 and have since signed with Fierce Panda and released their second single ‘Beautiful Ruin’ in April 2006, which Phill Jupitus made ‘single of the week’ on his 6 Music breakfast show, followed by their seven-track debut mini album ‘Never Look Back Here Again’ on 13th November. They were also one of the best bands Manchestermusic saw at In The City 2006, reported thus in a live review on this site: "What do you want from a band? Passion? Tons of it. Singer Mike is throwing his heart into every word like his life depends on it. Tunes? Every one a stormer. Think early teenage U2 fire, Chameleons soaring, echoes of 25 years ago, yeah, but shot through with 21st century spirit. Even a bit of Secret Machines power in there too. Energy? They're playing like they're in some rock'n'roll version of "Speed". And talent. Mike can swoop to a Smithsian falsetto and back in seconds. The guitars soar and dive. But most remarkable of all is drummer Steve. Yeah, I realise I've just spent over half a band's set watching the drummer. Crashing strength, complex fills, relentless pace, ****, I'm no expert but this lad is extraordinary. When they finish I want to shake their hands." THE JACKS (Newcastle) www.myspace.com/domgoldsmith The Jacks mix catchy rhythms and great harmonies with melodies that give the whole sound an edge of pop that will have you singing along in no time. They've got a unique feel to their live performance, each of them commanding fantastic stage presence while somehow managing to break down all the barriers between them and their audience. "They can't be pigeon-holed into any genre." - GIGS. THE OPPORTUNISTS (Newcastle) www.myspace.com/theopportunists The Opportunists music is about stuff that matters to them - having a good time and trying their best to make bad things better. They could write a load of shite about how they came together, what their favourite drink is and where they go shopping but that's irrelevant. Just listen. Indierocknrolldancesoulbluespunkpop might just about cover it. "Infectious bouncy guitars, catchy choruses and cracking harmonies" - Newfoundsounds |

When they finish I want to shake their hands." And as if that's not good enough, support comes from Manchester's own Laymar: "they are sounding better than ever, like a more troubled 65daysofstatic shot through with windswept melancholy. The dark shapes of spine-tingling bass and fractured electronics, the thunderclap drums, now interwoven with samples of distant voices – half heard transmissions and snatches of Eastern spiritual melody all drifting in and out. UKB MODERN WORLD @ THE QUAY IN BLYTH, FREE ENTRY, SATURDAY 10TH FEB, PLAYING: MODES(Durham) Since 2005, Modes, a four piece Durham based band, have been causing waves in the North East music scene with their mixture of raw passion and undeniable talent. Steve Lamacq’s - Favourite band – 2006. “Modes, an interesting quartet who mix the indie swagger with downright good and heartfelt tunes with not so much of the dated attitude that is generally associated with this genre”. CALVOON(North Shields) Calvoon have supported Babyshambles along with many others. Fresh from a national tour playing the countries finest venues they are busy recording a plethora of new tunes guaranteed to spice up your ears and colour the senses.“The second single from the Newcastle based quartet and they’re onto another winner. This is a rockin’ electro thumper which has a naggingly incessant quality, all driving beats and hooks galore. Pretty thrilling”.The Crack. THE ELECTRIC CITY (London) With compelling grunge vocals and killer grooves The Electric City are set to be one of the most exciting prospects for 2007. Citing influences from Muse to Prince, AC/DC to the Rapture this band manage to seamlessly bridge genres. They've also managed to open for We Are Scientists and The Futureheads. |

Free Night in Leeds. "In the smaller Church Suite at the Jabez Clegg it is perishingly cold. Things are behind schedule even before a note has been played - apparently one of the bands has been delayed getting here. Eventually an image flickers into life, some words in Russian light up the back wall of this darkest of spaces. Laymar are playing with the stage lights off, instead lit solely by the monochrome images of Sergei Eisenstein's Battleship Potemkin. This is the sound of Sigur Ros if they'd grown up in a dark Lancastrian mill town; iLiKETRAiNS with half-heard radar signals in place of words; beauty and decay. Ciaran Cullen, anti-frontman extraordinaire, flicks a bleached rockabilly forelock over his tightly clutched bass, swaying, entranced in his own post-rock chill as Colin Williams stands almost motionless at the side, disseminating synth and guitar waves. As expansive drone-chord soundscapes of the wordless trio seep from the speakers, shadows of the great warship and its rebel sailors flicker behind them and the icy cold in the room feels strangely appropriate." www.myspace.com/laymarmusic www.myspace.com/worriedaboutsatan |

GET VEGAS (Middlesbrough) www.myspace.com/getvegas Since their debut show in February 2006, the guys have gigged tirelessly across the UK, performing over 70 gigs in 2006. During this time they’ve supported many up and coming artists such as, Rattlesnake Remedy, Babystrange, Vanlustbader and Just Jack. They’ve also received the distinction of winning the 2006 Insangel Enigma Battle of the Bands Competition. "These guys drip attitude like sweat and can pin you to the ground with guitars sounding like Hendrix being played by Jimmy Page." - Ten Feet Tall MAYBE MURTLE TURTLE (Newcastle/Manchester) www.myspace.com/maybemyrtletyrtle Maybe Myrtle Tyrtle are a vibrant ray of geordie based light, shattering dull grey clouds of monotony with searing waves of foot tapping, ass slapping joy! With a line up of squaka guitars, pounding bass, tinkling triangle, sexy sax, screaming violin and a whole load of Bum-Chack-ing backing up the brilliant vocal musings of Roberto "Mad as a Hatter" Baggio - the band spread tales of life so crushing, so joyous and so catchy you'll soon be infected by the MMT bug. With over 100,000 hours gigging experience between them the band swagger with confidence and maturity on stage leaving sell out crowds of broken hearted girls and their broken hearted boys behind them.“It’s quite possible that Maybe Myrtle Tyrtle are the best example of psycobilly, rockabilly blues you will hear.” The Fly |

THE ROMANCE (Stockton) www.myspace.com/theromancemusic Such is the spirit of The Romance, their breathless art-pop has already seen them play to two thousand people at a Middlesbrough Music Live event, earn rave notices from gigging partners Arctic Monkeys and Babyshambles and get flustered London A&R men reaching for the road atlas. Not bad for four raffish scoundrels from Teesside barely out of their teens. “It's chirpy pop till you drop from The Romance. Every guitar hook is catchy. every chorus driven by irresistible stompy drumming. The songs are irresistable - no wonder they've landed a singles deal, there's a set full of songs here crying out for full on Radio One Treatment” SOUL RESISTANCE (Durham) www.myspace.com/soulresistance A 5 piece Rock & Roll outfit from the north of England, Soul Resistance were formed in Early 2005. Tired of the same jangly sound poluting the airwaves they turned everything up to 10 and let the Songs do the talking. The wall of sound that follows them to every gig is set to take you by storm so "strap in, cos its going to go mental". |

Hey everyone.
Beige Rage is the gig organising/promotion arm of post-rock electronica act 'Agent Elf'. You don't just listen to one type of music, do you? No. So why should the gigs you go to only cater for one type of act? The idea behind Beige Rage is to organise nights where you don't go to a gig and sit through four metal acts, or four acoustic singer/songwriters. Our past players have included UK hip hop acts, breakcore DJ's, bluegrass/folk quartets, ska bands and trip hop collaborations. So if you want a night of unadulterated musical talent that doesn't patronise your musical tastes, Beige Rage is the event for you! Please get in touch if you feel that you're a band that would fit in with this way of thinking. |

CARNATION (Sunderland) www.myspace.com/carnationmusic Carnation, were formed in november 2004. They did there first live radio performance on radio utopia after only 3 rehearsals with there new bass player and drummer. After watching "carnation" play i was totally in awe by there fantastic vocal arrangements and that little extra edge that id never seen on the sunderland scene since the old wearmouth hall days at the Sunderland Polytechnic ,as it was then. The band have played in london/ liverpool, the band have a new addition to there line up. Matty stoker, replaces craig on the drums and hopefully this will take the band on to bigger and better things. THE SUZERAINS (Sunderland) www.myspace.com/thesuzerains The Suzerains are a four piece band who gig throughout the North-East priding themselves on their dynamic and catchy tunes that are beautifully captured live. The band consist of John Hudson(lead vox and guitar), Andy McNicoll(vox and lead guitar), Dave Brennan(vox and bass guitar) and Ross Gardner (vox and drums). They quickly formed an understanding to where they wanted their music to go drawing on their 60’s influences and idols to produce their own unique sound. It was earlier this year that the Suzerains made their debut performance at the Quay in Blyth. Since then they have never fell short of their high expectations they set themselves. |

Laymar + Cindytalk + Tenebrous Liar at the 12 Bar Club 30/06/08
Laymar "In Strange Lines and Distances" album release on TV Records 23/06/08 - Dark, ambient, melodic, instrumental rock. -"If Sigur Ros were born to soundtrack the desolation of nature, Laymar were born to soundtrack the desolation of the inner city" MUSICOMH (9/10) -"dense, brooding instrumental rock atmospherics, and there’s something deftly and naturally cinematic to all that occurs " AMERICANA UK (7/10) -"tuneful phrases which weave playfully to draw you towards their personal vision of hell. Not for them the theatrical suggestion of the dark side, Laymar take you there through their music" BEARDED MAGAZINE -"there’s a great deal of depth and texture being stuck together by these three lads" SUBBA-CUTCHA (7/10) www.myspace.com/laymarmusic & Last FM Tenebrous Liar “Imagine Lift To Experience stuck in the eternal damnation their songs tried to escape from, but with a result more ashcan reality than spiritually vivid.” DROWNED IN SOUND -"moody and intense, occasionally terrifyingly primal, country-blues soundscapings". TIME OUT -“If Leonard Cohen brings a smile to your face and you are partial to a bit of low-fi then Tenebrous Liar is the band for you.” THE SUN Cindytalk A rare live performance from a band that's been making albums with friends and collaborators for the sake of art for almost 20 years. An abstract and minimal electronic set will intermingle with a partly improvised set of new material by a full band line-up, featuring singer Gordon Sharp alongside long-time Cindytalk drummer Paul Middleton, bass monster Gary Jeff, laptop obscurist Sherrill Crosby and new guitarist Daniel Knowler. Not to be missed. |

Roadhouse, Manchester, present RATATAT plus guests LAYMAR Advance: £6 Time: 8:00 pm - 1:00 am On Ratatat... Formerly known as Cherry, New York's rock-meets-electronica duo Ratatat features multi-instrumentalist/programmer Evan Mast and guitarist Mike Stroud. Mast is also the brains behind the pretty laptop pop of E*vax, and with his brother E*Rock he runs the indie electronic label Audio Dregs. Stroud also plays, in the studio and on tour, with artists including Ben Kweller and Dashboard Confessional. Between these duties (and Mast's job as a graphic designer), the duo found time to work on their collaboration. Mast worked beats and song ideas in his bedroom studio, which he gave to Stroud to develop while the guitarist was on the road. Though Mast and Stroud began working together in 2001, things began to really come together for the pair in 2003: in May, while they were still called Cherry, they played their first gig; by September they changed their name to Ratatat; and that November they issued their first single on Audio Dregs, which had a limited run of 1,100 copies. Dates with Franz Ferdinand, Interpol, and Battles followed, and Ratatat signed to XL Records. The duo's self-titled debut album arrived in spring 2004, coinciding with another round of dates with bands including !!!, Electrelane, and Tortoise, and two years later their sophomore record, Classics, was released. On Laymar... "...Laymar were born to soundtrack the desolation of the inner city, where robot vultures gather long after mankind has wiped itself off the face of the Earth and music is no more than a memory resonating in the steel skeletons of reinforced concrete. Don't let anyone ever tell you that music should make you want to dance." - Jenni Cole MUSIC OMH Do not be fooled by the gentle introduction which builds gradually with consummate ease, good dreams can often turn into nightmares. The really worrying aspect is that they achieve this vision so melodically and yet ultimately so convincingly. Put this record (In Strange Lines and Distances - TV Records) on and listen to it in a darkened room. Or, even better, put it on in your room and feel it darken around you. Laymar + Mugstar + Stray Dog Cafe @ Retro Bar (Wotgodforgot) Mugstar -- Laymar -- Stray Dog Cafe -- Blood Moon 5/11/08 Retro Bar, 78 Sackville Street, Manchester M1 3NJ (near Oxford Rd) £4.00 Mugstar www.myspace.com/mugstar are the sound of 10,000 suns exploding, pulsing with repetitive beauty, pounding like a supersonic mantra. They set sail for the sun in 2002 and have completed numerous voyages with the likes of Mudhoney, Faust, Mogwai, Melt Banana, Onieda and Acid Mothers Temple. The band recorded one of the last sessions for the late great John Peel and featured in his festive 50. Their debut full length album was released in December 2006 on Sea Records / Critical MASS Records to universal acclaim and even LP of the year in Penny Black music magazine (see reviews in Blog). A 7" on TRENSMAT Records is available now. Mugstar are currently writing songs for a new album to be recorded this year. They are also about to launch an album alongside the likes of Mudhoney, Bardo Pond, Kinski, Acid Mothers Temple, Magoo and White Hills. Laymar www.myspace.com/laymarmusic It’d be easy to lump Laymar into a category with instrumental rock noise-makers like Mogwai, Godspeed! and Up C Down C (you see how easy it was to do?), but Laymar are too complex to be compared off-hand to those bands, offering their own brand of quiet-loud-quiet which incorporates not just guitars and eerie silences, but also electronic beats and samples. Indeed, so complex are they that no matter how many times you listen to this, Laymar’s debut album, you get to know nothing about them, you build no relationships with the band, and they remain more faceless than the Daft Punk robots. It’s difficult even to know whether this is a Kraftwerk-style line of guys at laptops or a full eight-piece band. Over seven tracks, ‘In Strange Lines And Distances’ staggers from being the most thrilling thing you’ll hear for a long time (‘NU1’), to being daunting and at times terrifying (‘Swords’), like the soundtrack to A Very Bad Thing. But it needs listening to, and it’s one for turning up very loud indeed. 4/5 The-Fly Magazine Stray Dog Cafe www.myspace.com/straydogcafe Quirky punks with post-punk pop, incessant catchy riffage and musical lyricalness. "Noise-pop trio Stray Dog Café have an admirable range of influences and leftfield ideas…self-mocking really underplays the impressive level of imagination on board. " - Manchestermusic Blood Moon www.myspace.com/bloodmoonmusic take distorted bass lines, screaming saxaphones, drums, feed them through a sequencer and produce a satanic ambience from the pit of hell. |
